Mayco’s Stoneware glaze assortment, including Opals, Ices, and Washes, offers a variety of finishes, textures and endless possibilities for glaze combinations. Designed to perform from cones 5-10, in oxidation or reduction firing processes on stoneware clay body of choice. Artists will appreciate the consistency of performance and control of movement. Artists will find amazing glaze combinations to expand the creative possibilities in the studio. Whether it is a pairing with a Mayco Wash, a Mayco Clear or a complex surface like SW-127 Olivine, these layering techniques will improve the work of any clay enthusiast.
Cone 6 oxidation: Opal Lustre is a glossy, semi-opaque glaze that displays variegated shades of blues, greens, and purples. Breaks warm brown over texture.
Cone 10 reduction: Color flattens, and warm undertones come through.
TIP: This glaze is semi-fluid at 3 coats. Additional coats or increased application thickness may result in movement. Can be used in oxidation or reduction firings. Results may vary. The choice of clay body, thickness of application, firing process, and temperature will greatly affect the fired results. Always test your application on your clay body in your kiln environment.
NOTICE: Due to varied results, Mayco has done extensive testing of SW219. This product has a wide range of variability. Clay body, application, firing process, and temp will affect the fired results. We recommend testing cone 6 (1222°C/2232°F) in a lightly packed kiln on a white stoneware clay body with texture. If you are unable to test and accept varied results, we do not recommend this glaze. If you are unsatisfied with the results, this glaze looks great in combo with other Mayco glazes.

Cone 6: Rose quartz is a glossy, opaque, variegated pink glaze that breaks over texture. Pastel pink micro-crystallization may develop on vertical surfaces.
Cone 10: Glaze darkens and desaturates to a dusty rose with red and mauve variegation and white micro-crystallization. Breaks mauve grey over texture.
TIP: Thin application results in vibrant pink; light pink variegation develops with additional application. This glaze is fluid at 3 coats. Anticipate glaze movement with receded application on vertical surfaces to prevent unwanted running.

USAGE VARIATIONS AND FAQ’S
Design Details Preserved
Foundation Opaques perform well as a base color on which detailed design work can be laid.
They are a little more fluid that Stroke & Coat®, but design integrity will remain after firing.
All Over Coverage
Not only do you get great coverage with just 2-3 coats but the cost-per-ounce makes Foundations one of the best economic choices for large volume, large areas uses.
Foundation glazes are non-toxic and food safe - perfect for food surfaces.
Q: Can Foundations be applied to greenware or clay?
A: Mayco has tested the Foundations Opaque glazes on clay with successful results. Apply 2-3 coats of Foundations over the entire piece, leaving an area unglazed such as a back or bottom to allow for outgassing. Clay should be totally dry before firing. Fire to shelf cone 04 (1060° C).
Q: Can Foundations be fired to higher temperatures (cone 6 and above)?
A: Many Foundations Opaques can be fired to cone 6. Darker colors - green, red, blue, orange, purple - will maintain much of their original color value (they may darken a bit compared to cone 06 results). Lightly pigmented colors - pink, yellow, tan, lighter purples - will fade. Always test to see if this application variance will work on your specific project.

This sample kit contains one 4oz jar of each of the 12 new Mayco Glazes/Engobes.
We are very excited to share that Mayco will have 12 new Mid-range glazes COMING SOON but right now a sample kit is available so you can try them out! This release includes a new Stoneware Crystal glaze which uses Lavender Mist as the base and a color match to Duncan Renaissance, Opal Lustre. In addition, you'll notice two "new" product lines within the stoneware release- Micros and Engobes.
What are Micros? Micro's are short for microcrystalline which is a glaze that develops small crystallization from the the zinc and silica during the cooling process. Micros do not actually contain a glass crystal like other Mayco stoneware crystal glazes, rather, the effect is created by the glaze itself during the firing process. These glazes can be fired from cones 5-10, but the crystallization may not form at higher temperatures. With the exception of Micro Pearl, the micros are not dinnerware safe due to surface durability. Mayco recommends using micros on the outside of dinnerware, below the lip line, or on decorative wares.
What are Engobes? Engobes are a hybrid of slip, glaze and underglaze, used to coat your clay body to your preferred finish/color and are often used for a variety of decorative techniques, such as sgraffito and majolica. They can be applied to wet clay, greenware or bisque and fire from cones 5-10. Engobes have a similar texture to underglazes and require a clear glaze (matte or gloss) to be considered dinnerware safe. Layering the new micros over the engobes yields fantastic results! One of the highlights that Mayco has discovered for engobes is that they allow studios to change the color of their clay body without cross-contamination or messy cleanup.
