Paragon GL-18ADTSD Glass Fusing Kiln

Create breathtaking glass in the deluxe GL-18ADTSD Professional Series glass kiln. The GL-18ADTSD is proudly made in America by skilled workers and is designed for those whose livelihood depends on glass production. The kiln includes features not found on competitive kilns.

The GL-18ADTSD digital kiln fires from the top, three sides, and door for unsurpassed heat distribution. Use the kiln’s side heat for taller projects such as drop-out vases sagged through a ring mold. Side elements, seated in dropped, recessed brick grooves, span the three walls.

The GL-18ADTSD kiln is equipped with the standard Sentry controller.

The kiln is available, however, with advanced power ratio technology at no extra charge. Pioneered by Paragon, power ratio balances the heat between top and side/door elements. Program the digital controller to balance the heat between the top and sides in increments of 10%. (i.e., 100% top - 0% sides, 50% top - 50% sides, 80% top – 20% sides, etc.) Set the heat balance for any combination desired between the top and sides so that the total heat output equals 100%. The power ratio GL-18ADTSD requires more amperage than the standard model. If you want the power ratio option, be sure to specify it at the time you place your order.

Optional Mercury Relays

Order your new kiln with the mercury relay upgrade. The mercury relay is quiet and reliable. The life of a mercury relay has been measured in millions of on/off cycles. Mercury relays outlast the standard mechanical relays and are available as an option on new kilns.

The GL-18ADTSD digital kiln is 13” high inside with room to bend glass for curved windows or cabinet doors and to repair lampshades. Make glass-fused platters. Crack the door to rake or emboss designs in the glass. Make small-to-medium sized castings and pâte de verre.

Engineered for Reliability

Paragon’s GL-series are made for years of rigorous firing, as artists all over America can attest. The insulating firebrick, wrapped in heavy-gauge steel, soak up heat for slow, efficient cooling. A double heat shield and air gap between the kiln and ventilated switch box help keep electrical components cool for long, trouble-free service. Costly heavy-gauge nickel-plated copper wiring is covered with high temperature glass-braided insulation. The thermocouple, which senses temperature inside the kiln, is protected with a high-nickel stainless steel sheath for long life.

The GL-series lid elements use an element groove that eliminates element pins. The element coils are wider than the groove opening, so the elements stay in place without pins.

The spring-pressure latch and a ½" recess around the edge of the firebrick door keep the door tightly closed. The door remains rock-steady on a heavy hinge shaft. Four hand lifts aid moving. The base is open in the back and slotted to dissipate heat.

Watch the red-hot glass through two tapered peepholes, drilled one above the other in the wall opposite the switch box. Peephole plugs are included. (Most GL-18 models are drilled for peepholes. However, some international models have no peepholes unless you specify them at the time that you order the kiln.)

Imagine the glass you could sag, slump, and fuse with this kiln. Make small bowls, pendants, earrings, cufflinks, and even bracelets. Enjoy the glittering beauty of dichroics. Make treasured gifts. When you own a Paragon kiln, you can experiment with new glass ideas to your heart’s content.

Becky Johnson, a glass teacher in Dallas, Texas, describes the excitement of a kiln: “I like to open the kiln with my students so that we can review and admire each other’s treasures together. The transformation of the glass inside the kiln is magical and mystical. It changes from pieces of arranged cut glass to awe-inspiring art. To be some part of that process is a true gift.”

Digital Accuracy

You will be amazed at the convenience of digital firing. The reliable solid-state Sentry controller continually monitors the firing so you can spend your time productively without closely watching the kiln. (Please remember, however, to check the kiln during firing and to monitor it near the expected shutoff time.) The sealed touch pad keeps out dust and is easy to wipe clean.

Paragon’s innovative controller will help you achieve consistent results from one firing to the next. The controller has powerful features that you will enjoy using. Yet we have also worked hard to make the controller user-friendly.

Do you ever wonder how much electricity your kiln uses? The digital controller can figure this for you with the press of a button. Find out how little a kiln actually costs to fire.

The GL-18ADTSD has a durable high temperature, water-base finish. We use water-base paint because of the low emissions during spraying. This creates a safer working environment for our employees and cuts down on pollution.

Customer Service

At Paragon, phone calls that we receive during business hours are answered by a live person at the factory. We are here to help you long after the sale should you ever need it.

Optional Ceramic Fiber Top

The standard GL-series kiln comes with an insulating firebrick top, grooved for heating elements. The upgrade option is a ceramic fiber top with element grooves. The fiber top helps keep the glass clean during firing.

Optional Kiln Stand

The heavy-duty GL-series stand raises your GL-18, GL-22 or GL-24 kiln to a convenient working height. Begin operating your new kiln without having to find a table strong enough to support over 300 pounds. The table is 147 pounds of rock solid construction.

Sentinel Controller optional on new kilns with a Sentry Controller
Sentinel Controller optional on new kilns with a Sentry Controller
This kiln can be ordered with the optional Sentinel Smart Touch controller instead of the standard Sentry 2.0 12-key controller. The upgrade price is only for a Sentinel ordered with a new kiln. The Sentinel is available as an option on any Paragon kiln that comes with the 12-key Sentry controller.

The new controller is made by Bartlett Instruments of Fort Madison, Iowa. New Paragon kilns equipped with the Sentinel give a continuous amperage and circuit voltage readout during firings. Orton Ventmaster, Installed
Orton Ventmaster, Installed
KILNVENT MASTER 120V M9 VENT MASTER, Installed (on large 4-sided kilns) The patented Orton Vent Master not only vents fumes but also improves firing results. At this price, the vent is factory-installed onto the back of the kiln.

It pulls fresh oxygen into the kiln for brighter colors, especially noticeable with red and orange glazes and decals. Fire red and green glazes in the same load without glaze contamination. The Vent Master draws air from the kiln, dilutes it with room air, and pushes it outdoors through a vent hose.

The extra oxygen and increased air movement help burn carbon out of the clay, which helps eliminate a host of firing problems: bloating, dark patches in the clay, porcelain mildew, pinholes, pitting, blisters, and bubbles.

The Vent Master removes fumes containing volatile metals, fluorides and sulphur oxides. You can fire even lusters, decals, metallics, and pate-de-verre glass without strong odor.

The flow of fresh air helps even out the temperature throughout the kiln. The vent also extends the life of the Kiln Sitter tube assembly, since fumes by-pass the tube. You will enjoy the convenience of the Vent Master. Throughout the firing, keep the lid closed and peephole plugs inserted. You no longer need to remember to lower the hot lid from vented position.

The Vent Master increases firing time by about five minutes for firings up to cone 4; 12 minutes for firings from cone 4 to 10. It has little effect on maximum temperature. At 132 watts, electrical consumption of the Vent Master motor is only pennies per firing.

From the shut-off temperature down to 1000°F, the Vent Master has little effect on cooling time. From 1000°F to room temperature, it reduces cooling time by about two hours.

As with Paragon kilns, the Orton Vent Master can be made for any electrical system in the world. Approved for use in the 1992 Uniform Mechanical Code. UL/CSA approved for UL Listed kilns. ETL Listed, CE Certified. Two year limited warranty.

The Vent Master requires a separate 120 volt wall plug unless your kiln is equipped with the AOP vent. (Vents that plug into the AOP of a 208 or 240 volt kiln must be the same voltage as the kiln.)

A 3’ long 2” duct comes with each vent. The 2” duct runs between the collection cup and the blower motor. Use 4” aluminum dryer duct or 4” PVC pipe between the motor and the vent outlet. (Do not use vinyl dryer duct.)

Since the vent motor is away from the kiln, there is no vibration in the kiln, the motor is kept away from the heat of the kiln, and the fan is easy to clean. The Vent Master works with all Paragon kilns except the smallest tabletop models. The Vent Master can vent two kilns. For the second kiln, order the Vent Master Expansion Kit.

2x2 Glass Viewing Window
2x2 Glass Viewing Window
Watch the bright red kiln interior through the optional 2” x 2” high-temperature glass window, which is rated to 2300°F. This is especially convenient for glass fusing. Watch your glass treasures progress through every stage from tack fuse to full fuse. (Note: always wear firing safety glasses when viewing the kiln interior.)

This price is for an optional glass window ordered with a new kiln.

Mercury Relay Upgrade TF-26
Mercury Relay Upgrade TF-26
Order your new kiln with the factory installed mercury relay upgrade. The mercury relay is quiet and reliable. The life of a mercury relay has been measured in millions of on/off cycles. Mercury relays outlast the standard mechanical relays and are available as an option on new kilns.

Ceramic Fiber Top with Embedded Elements
This kiln can be ordered with an optional ceramic fiber top to replace the firebrick top. (Please note that the price shown here is for a factory-installed optional lid on a new kiln.) The elements are embedded into the ceramic fiber. This eliminates element pins. This design has been proven for several years in the Bullseye factory.
Lid or Door Safety Switch
Lid or Door Safety Switch
The optional lid or door safety switch turns off power to the heating elements when the lid is raised or door is opened. The controller remains powered. The switch turns the power to the elements back on when the lid is closed. The switch mounts to the back of the lid or front of the door. IMPORTANT: The lid or door safety switch is required in some areas such as Canada and Europe.

Paragon GL-18AD Glass Fusing Kiln

Create breathtaking glass in the deluxe GL-18AD Professional Series glass kiln. The GL-18AD is proudly made in America by skilled workers and is designed for those whose livelihood depends on glass production.

An Endless Variety of Glass Projects

The GL-18AD digital kiln is 13” high inside with room to bend glass for curved windows or cabinet doors and to repair lampshades. Make glass-fused platters. Crack the door to rake or emboss designs in the surface. Make small-to-medium sized castings and pâte de verre.

Engineered for Reliability

Paragon’s GL-series are made for years of rigorous firing, as artists all over America can attest. The insulating firebrick, wrapped in heavy-gauge steel, soak up heat for slow, efficient cooling of the glass.

Dual Mechanical Relays

The GL-18AD has dual mechanical relays for extra reliability. They send power to the elements on command from the digital controller. Two relays last longer than the single relay of competitive kilns because of the reduced amperage going through each relay.

Optional Deluxe Mercury Relays

Relays turn on the kiln’s heating elements. Order your new kiln with the quiet, reliable mercury relay instead of the standard mechanical relays. The life of a mercury relay has been measured in millions of on/off cycles. The mercury relay far outlasts the standard mechanical relays and is optional on the GL-18AD.

Pinless Element Groove

The GL-series lid elements are mounted in pinless element grooves. Pins are unnecessary because the element coils are wider than the groove opening. Wires are fastened to the elements with heat-dissipating connectors refined and proven over many years in Paragon kilns.

Convenient Loading

The spring-pressure door latch and a ½" recess around the edge of the firebrick door keep the door tightly closed. The door remains rock-steady on a heavy hinge shaft. Four hand lifts aid moving. The base is open in the back and slotted to dissipate heat.

Peepholes

Watch the red-hot glass through two tapered peepholes, drilled one above the other in the wall opposite the switch box. The peepholes are hardened and sealed with a special refractory coating to help protect the glass from dust. Peephole plugs are included. (Most GL-18 models are drilled for peepholes. However, some international models have no peepholes. If you are outside the U.S. and you want peepholes, please specify them at the time that you order the kiln.

You can also order an optional 2” x 2” glass window for your kiln. The window is rated to 2300°F (1260°C), so it can easily withstand glass fusing temperatures.

The Convenience of Digital Firing

The electronic circuit board can be removed in minutes for upgrade or repair. The board is the heart of the digital kiln and is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

Water Base Paint

The GL-18AD has a durable high temperature, water-base finish. We chose water-base paint because of the low emissions during spraying. This creates a safer working environment for our employees and cuts down on pollution.

Begin operating your new kiln without having to find a table strong enough to support 250 pounds. The table is 147 pounds of rock solid construction.

Customer Service

At Paragon, phone calls that we receive during business hours are answered by a live person at the factory. We are here to help you long after the sale should you ever need it.

And, of course, Paragon kilns are made in America by highly skilled workers. Fifty-one percent of them have been with Paragon for over a decade.

Paragon Xpress-Q-11

The Xpress-Q-11A fires rapidly to 2350F. Create breathtaking jewelry or small keepsakes using almost any medium you can imagine: silver clay, enameling, china painting, glass, lost wax casting, ceramics, stoneware, and porcelain. Since the kiln opens from the front instead of the top, it is ideal for copper enameling. The Xpress-Q-11A is a true multipurpose kiln.

Imagine the glass you could sag, slump, and fuse with this kiln. Make pendants, earrings, cufflinks, and even bracelets. Enjoy the glittering beauty of dichroics. This kiln will give you years of creative enjoyment. It is light-weight; take it with you to seminars or on vacation.

The Xpress-Q-11A comes with the Sentry Xpress digital controller, which is mounted in the kiln base (instead of a side switch box) to save table space. The front control panel is tilted for easy operation.

The Sentry Xpress 3-key controller is packed with features. It includes Cone-Fire and 8-segment Ramp-Hold modes. (Note: Ramp-Hold and Cone-Fire on the Sentry Xpress do not include some of the advanced features of the 12-key Sentry 2.0.)

Features of the Sentry Xpress 3-key Controller for Ceramic Kilns

  • Fire to a pyrometric cone by merely entering cone number and slow, medium or fast speed.
  • Program Review lets you check the program you are about to fire.
  • Set a temperature alarm to remind yourself to close a vented lid.
  • Design Ramp-Hold programs with up to 8 segments (steps).
  • Skip a segment in Ramp-Hold during firing.
  • Hold (soak) the temperature in both Cone-Fire and Ramp-Hold.
  • Control both heating and cooling in Ramp-Hold.
  • Add hold time in Ramp-Hold during firing.
  • Change the target temperature in Ramp-Hold during firing.
  • Temperature Display throughout firing and cooling in your choice of °F or °C
  • Thermocouple Offset adjusts the thermocouple readout.
  • Set the Delay to turn on the kiln later to suit your schedule.
  • Error Messages report mechanical problems such as a disconnected thermocouple, stuck relay or broken element.
  • 12 Month Warranty
  • LED Lights show whether you are in program, review, or firing mode.
  • Colorful, illustrated instruction manual. Download it from the “Additional Information” section below to review these features in more detail.

A 1/2” hole is stamped into the steel door case and includes a brushed stainless steel cover. We have left the firebrick behind the hole undrilled so that you can drill it to the exact size that you need for a peephole, vent hole, or extra pyrometer hole. (Most people do not need the hole and leave the firebrick undrilled.)

The Xpress-Q-11A heating element, exposed in dropped, recessed insulating firebrick grooves, is easy to replace. The 2 1/2” thick firebricks store plenty of heat for slow cooling through the glass annealing range. For small glass pieces such as jewelry, you can anneal without having to turn the elements back on during cooling. (Extra heat is necessary for annealing large pieces, however.)

Unlatch and open the door with one hand. No extra stand is needed; the built-in base stays cool during operation.

The Xpress-Q11A can ship by UPS. Enjoy lower shipping cost and faster service. Specially designed cartons and foam padding assure that the kiln will arrive safely.

Paragon kilns are built to be dependable. They are loaded with attention to details, such as the costly nickel-plated copper wire with high temperature glass-braided insulation. Wires are fastened to the elements with heat-dissipating connectors refined and proven over many years in Paragon kilns.

Becky Johnson, a glass teacher in Dallas, Texas, describes opening the kiln: “I like to open the kiln with my students so that we can review and admire each other’s treasures together. The transformation of the glass inside the kiln is magical and mystical. It changes from pieces of arranged cut glass to awe-inspiring art. To be some part of that process is a true gift.”

“Paragon kilns just go on working forever,” said Jeff Zamek, author of “What Every Potter Should Know.” He added, “Paragon kilns have one of the lowest incidences of repair of any kiln manufactured in the U.S.”

Furniture Kit
Recommended furniture kit for the Paragon Q-11A, Xpress-Q-11A, and equivalent sized kilns.dulcemieleventsluded:
1 C-2 Shelf (5” square x 3/8”)
4 – 2” long 1” wide Square Posts
1 lb. Bag Kiln Wash
Shipping Weight: 2.00 Lbs.   ( 0.91 Kg.)

Ware is fired on the shelf and kiln bottom so you can fire multiple layers of ware in your kiln. Coat the shelf with kiln wash, which prevents glaze or glass from sticking to the shelf.

Paragon’s durable cordierite shelves resist warpage and thermal shock. They are volume-stable. (Note: The photo shows a general assortment of furniture rather than the exact contents of this shelf kit.)

1in x 3in Glass Viewing Window
1in x 3in Glass Viewing Window
The 1" x 3" window is available on the smaller kilns such as the E-9A and Q-11A. Watch the bright red kiln interior through the optional 1” x 3” high-temperature glass window. (Note: always wear firing safety glasses when viewing the kiln interior.) The glass window is guaranteed up to 2300°F.
The window is especially useful for glass fusing and copper enameling. Conveniently watch your glass treasures progress through every stage from tack fuse to full fuse.
Enamelists have said, "I can't live without the window!" As you look through the window, angle your line of sight so that the glow from an element reflects off the surface of the enameling piece.
First, the enamel will appear granulated. As the glass particles begin to fuse, the surface will resemble an orange peel. Remove the rack when the copper piece appears a rosy red and the reflection of the glowing element is smooth.

Paragon Xpress-E-12T

The digital Xpress-E-12T fires to 2000°F (1093°C)*. Create breathtaking jewelry or small keepsakes in silver clay, enameling, china painting, glass, lost wax casting, or bronze clay. Since the kiln opens from the front, it is ideal for copper enameling.

Imagine the glass you could sag, slump, and fuse with this kiln. Make small bowls, pendants, earrings, cufflinks, and even bracelets. Enjoy the glittering beauty of dichroics. This kiln will give you years of creative enjoyment.

The Xpress-E-12T comes with the Sentry Xpress digital controller mounted in the kiln base (instead of a side switch box) to save table space. The kiln includes a door safety switch that turns off the element when the door is opened. The controller automatically resumes firing when you close the door.

The Sentry Xpress 3-key controller is packed with features. It includes two modes: Single Speed and 8-segment Ramp-Hold.

Features of the Sentry Xpress 3-key Controller on the Xpress-E-12T

  • Design programs with up to 8 segments (steps) in Ramp-Hold mode.
  • Fire to a single temperature at a single speed in the simplified Single Speed mode.
  • Ramp-Hold mode can store 4 programs.
  • Skip a segment in Ramp-Hold during firing without stopping the kiln to reprogram.
  • Change the target temperature in Ramp-Hold during firing without stopping the kiln to reprogram.
  • Hold (soak) the temperature in both Single Speed and Ramp-Hold. Experiment with Hold to improve color saturation of china paints.
  • Add Hold Time during firing without stopping the kiln to reprogram.
  • Control both heating and cooling in Ramp-Hold.
  • Program Review lets you check the program you are about to fire.
  • Program the Temperature Alarm to sound when the kiln reaches a specific temperature. Use this to remind yourself to check on the kiln.
  • Temperature displays throughout firing and cooling in your choice of °F or °C.

The Xpress-E-12T heating element, exposed in dropped, recessed insulating firebrick grooves, is easy to replace if ever necessary. The 2 1/2” thick firebricks store plenty of heat for slow cooling through the glass annealing range. For small glass pieces such as jewelry, you can anneal without having to turn the element back on during cooling. (If extra heat is necessary to anneal large pieces, that is easy. Just program a slow cooling segment in Ramp-Hold mode.) The firebricks store heat for quick temperature recovery after removing a copper enameling piece.

The thermocouple is protected with a high-nickel stainless steel sheath for long life. A switch on the front panel turns off power to the controller when the kiln is not in use.

Unlatch and open the door with one hand; the latch operates so smoothly that delicate copper enameling or silver clay pieces remain undisturbed while opening or closing the door. The door opens smoothly on a heavy-duty 1/2” hinge shaft. No extra stand is needed; the built-in base stays cool even during extended hold times.

The interior is large enough to fire a 10” bronze clay container. A vent hole in the top, complete with tapered vent plug, is designed for lost wax casting. You can also vent combustible cork clay and other fillers used with silver clay.

The Xpress-E-12T can ship by UPS.

The Xpress-E-12T has a durable high temperature, water-base finish. We chose water-base paint because of the low emissions during spraying. This creates a safer working environment for our employees and cuts down on air pollution.

Paragon kilns are made in America by skilled workers.

Becky Johnson, a glass teacher in Dallas, Texas, describes opening a kiln to see the freshly fired glass: “I like to open the kiln with my students so that we can review and admire each other’s treasures together.

*The standard Xpress-E-12T is rated to 2000°F (1093°C). If you need to reach 2250°F (1232°C), specify either the 240 volt version or 3” thick firebricks instead of the standard 2 1/2” thick firebricks. (Please add €20.00 retail to the 3" brick version. The 240 volt kiln is the same price as the 120 volt.) Please contact us for details.

Paragon’s warranty is not affected by frequency of use. Fire your new kiln every day if you want, even in commercial settings. That will have no effect on the warranty period.

Sentry 12 Key Controller Upgrade
This kiln can be ordered with the optional Sentry 12-key controller instead of the standard Sentry Xpress 3-key controller. The upgrade price is only for a Sentry 12-key ordered with a new kiln.
Controller Comparison
Because you can type numbers into the 12-key Sentry, it is faster to program than the 3-key. (Numbers are programmed into the 3-key Sentry Xpress by scrolling up or down with arrow keys.)
Ramp-Hold programs are divided into segments. Each segment has a target temperature, firing rate, and, if desired, a temperature hold. Hold (soak) maintains a specific temperature. (Programs remain in storage even when the kiln is unplugged.)
Program Storage, 12-key Sentry: one 20-segment and eight 10-segment programs
Program Storage, 3-key Sentry Xpress: four custom programs, 8 segments (steps) each
General Features That are Unique to the 12-key Sentry
Firing Cost: Enter your cost of electricity and the kilowatts used by your kiln. At the end of a firing, the controller will give the cost of electricity to fire that load. Find out how little a kiln actually costs to fire. Learn to conserve energy by experimenting with firing speed, load density, etc.
AOP Vent: The “Auxiliary Output” is available on most Paragon kilns that have the 12-key Sentry. The AOP is a relay-powered electrical receptacle mounted to the kiln. You can plug an Orton Vent Master into the AOP to control when the vent operates during firing.
Stop/Back Key goes back one step with each key press during programming to correct errors.
Add Time Key adds five minutes to a temperature hold with each key press during firing. Helpful for glass with holds.
Thermocouple Selection: The 12-key Sentry can operate types K, S or R thermocouples.
Program Safety Lock for the program in active memory gives you peace of mind.
E-Series Bead Door
E-Series Bead Door
Adding the optional 2 1/2” x 6 1/2” bead door to your E-series is like buying two kilns instead of one. Not only can you fire enameling, glass, and ceramics, but with the bead door you can also anneal glass beads. Imagine the fun that this will add to your kiln. Comes complete with bead mandrel holder.
Note: The kiln may not reach its maximum temperature and may fire a little slower when equipped with the bead door.

Paragon Xpress-E-9A

The digital Xpress-E-9A fires to 2000°F. Create breathtaking jewelry or small keepsakes in silver clay, enameling, china painting, glass, lost wax casting, or ceramics. Since the kiln opens from the front instead of the top, it is ideal for copper enameling.

The Xpress-E-9A comes with the Sentry Xpress digital controller, which is mounted in the kiln base (instead of a side switch box) to save table space. The front control panel is tilted for easy operation.

The Sentry Xpress 3-key controller is packed with features. It includes two modes: Single Speed and 8-segment Ramp-Hold.

Features of the Sentry Xpress 3-key Controller on the Xpress-E-9A

  • Design programs with up to 8 segments (steps) in Ramp-Hold mode.
  • Fire to a single temperature at a single speed in the simplified Single Speed mode.
  • Ramp-Hold mode can store 4 programs.
  • Skip a segment in Ramp-Hold during firing without having to stop the kiln to reprogram.
  • Change the target temperature in Ramp-Hold during firing without having to stop the kiln to reprogram.
  • Hold (soak) the temperature in both Single Speed and Ramp-Hold. Experiment with Hold to improve color saturation of china paints.
  • Add Hold Time during firing without having to stop the kiln to reprogram.
  • Control both heating and cooling in Ramp-Hold.
  • Program Review lets you check the program you are about to fire.
  • Program the Temperature Alarm to sound when the kiln reaches a specific temperature. Use this to remind yourself to check on the kiln.

The Xpress-E-9A heating element, exposed in dropped, recessed insulating firebrick grooves, is easy to replace.

The Xpress-E-9A can ship by UPS.

Paragon’s warranty is not affected by frequency of use. Fire your new kiln every day if you want, even in commercial settings. That will have no effect on the warranty period.

Furniture Kit
Recommended furniture kit for the Caldera, E-9, E-10, FireFly, and equivalent sized kilns.
Included:
1 C-7 (7" square x 5/8") Shelf
4 - 1/2" long, 1" wide Square Posts
Furnitre kit shipping weight: 8lbs

Paragon Caldera XL
Fire porcelain, stoneware, china, ceramics, and decals in Paragon’s digital Caldera XL. Test glazes and glaze application ideas before running production quantities in a large studio kiln.

You will not outgrow a small kiln even if you acquire a larger kiln later. Continue to use the Caldera XL for testing or for small projects. Carry it with you to seminars or on vacation; convenient hand lifts on the sides aid in moving the kiln.

The Caldera XL in the Classroom
A Caldera XL is a nice addition to school programs. A test kiln is relatively inexpensive. With the Caldera XL, students can make gifts in time for a birthday or holiday instead of waiting until the school’s large kiln is fired. A test kiln creates enthusiasm for a clay program. Students can test glazes while they feel the momentum instead of waiting to fire them in the large kiln.

New teachers inherit bags of unlabeled clay in their classrooms. Many loads of clay have been ruined because they were fired to the wrong temperature. With a Caldera XL kiln, you can easily test unlabeled clay.

Built to Last
The firebrick corners are fitted together with L-shaped notches for extra strength. This type of joint lasts longer than the butted joint and the "picture frame" mitered joint found on competitive brands.

The Type-K thermocouple, which reads the firing chamber temperature, is protected in a high-nickel stainless steel sheath for long life. A steel base supports the brick bottom. The Caldera XL comes with a built-in steel stand; no extra stand is needed. Use the switch on the front panel to turn off power to the controller when the kiln is idle.

Both sides of the lid and top rim of sidewall firebricks are hardened and sealed with a refractory coating to protect the ware from dust. The firing chamber, including the lid and bottom, is made of 3” thick firebricks, 20% thicker than standard 2 1/2” bricks.

The Caldera XL has dual mechanical relays for extra reliability. They turn on power to the elements after receiving a signal from the digital controller. Two relays last longer than the single relay of competitive kilns because of the reduced amperage going through each relay.

Heating elements are made from the finest high-temperature wire available. Paragon uses heat-dissipating element connectors refined and proven over many years in our kilns. The stainless steel case and lid band include case tighteners for easy maintenance.

Water-Base Paint
The Caldera XL control box is painted with a durable high temperature, water-base finish. We use water-base paint because of the low emissions during spraying. This creates a safer working environment for our employees and cuts down on pollution.

UPS Shipping
The Caldera XL can ship by UPS. Enjoy a lower shipping cost and faster service. Specially designed cartons and foam padding assure that the kiln will arrive safely.

The Convenience of Digital Firing
The reliable solid-state Sentry Xpress controller continually monitors the firing so you do not need to watch it closely. (Please remember, however, to check the kiln occasionally during firing and to monitor it near the expected shutoff time.) You can try out a demonstration of the controller on your computer by clicking here. Practice using the controller before you even buy the kiln.

Paragon’s innovative controller will help you achieve consistent firing results. The user-friendly controller has powerful features that you will enjoy.

The Sentry Xpress controller fires in either Ramp-Hold or Cone-Fire mode. Control both heating and cooling with simple 3-key operation.

Creative Satisfaction
The heat of the kiln offers wonderful surprises. Glazes undergo a complete transformation in the kiln. Opening a kiln to view your masterpieces is a joy you will never outgrow. Get your family involved and create priceless memories using your kiln.

The Furniture Kit
The furniture kit consists of carefully selected fireclay shelves and posts for the Caldera XL or Caldera XL-KS. When estimating the price of the kiln, include the cost of furniture. The furniture allows you to stack multiple layers of ware. Without it, you could fire only the ware that would fit on the kiln bottom.

Sentry 12 Key Controller Upgrade

Paragon TnF-28-3

The massive, 12-sided Paragon digital TnF-28-3 kiln is a profit center of the busy ceramic studio. It eats up stacks of low-fire ware. At a cost per cubic foot, the TnF-28-3 is one of the most economically priced standard kilns we make.

The TnF-28-3 now features sectional construction. Separate the kiln bottom and sections to repair bricks, change elements, or to move the kiln down narrow stairwells or through the narrowest doorways. Twist-lock spring latches hold the assembled collars securely.

The top row of brick in the TnF-28-3 is 2” high and without element grooves. It is less susceptible to damage during loading than a grooved brick. We have upgraded the TnF-28-3 kiln to 48 amps. With beefier elements, it fires to temperature with less strain. It is rated to 2150°F, ideal for low-fire ware.

During busy seasons when orders are backlogged, you will be grateful you own a dependable Paragon kiln. Studio owners call these kilns “real work horses.”

Paragon studio kilns have withstood years of abuse in school environments. High school ceramics teachers fire these kilns unmercifully, without remorse. Yet the kilns keep going. People swear by them.

Hinged at the bottom, the switch box on 8, 10 & 12 sided TnF kilns opens forward for easy maintenance. A folding support arm holds the box in the open position. The Sentry is mounted at the top of the switch box within easy reach. Operate it from a comfortable position.

The TnF-28-3 uses deluxe 3” thick firebrick throughout: in the sidewalls, the reversible brick bottom, and the 3” thick lid. The massive lid is easy to lift with Paragon's patented “LiteLid,” which does away with cumbersome pulleys and cords and reduces lid weight to only several pounds of pressure. Most people can lift the lid with one hand. Unlike pulleys and weights, the LiteLid is self-contained on the kiln. No need to drill holes in the ceiling for pulleys. The LiteLid sharply reduces wear between the lid and top rim of firebrick. The truss and floating lid allow expansion of the lid. Ask competitors if their lid spring includes a truss and floating lid.

The 24” wide stand for the TnF-28-3 kiln supports the brick bottom with framing that is 4 ½” wide across the top of each side. The stand is rock-steady, with 16-gauge frame and heavy 12-gauge legs.

If you move your kiln out of the way when not in use, order an optional deluxe kiln stand with steel casters.

A heavy galvanized steel base covers the reversible brick bottom completely. It folds up under the stainless case on all sides to strengthen the firing chamber. This is one more assurance that your Paragon kiln is built to last.

The controller has powerful features that you will enjoy using. Yet we have also worked hard to make the controller user-friendly.

Do you ever wonder how much electricity your kiln uses? The digital controller can figure this for you with the press of a button. Find out how little a kiln actually costs to fire. Learn to conserve energy by experimenting with firing speed, load density, etc.

This is to inform the kiln user of voltage drops during times of heavy electrical demand, such as hot summers. The amperage reading indicates when the elements are beginning to wear.

Ramp-Hold programs can have a customized program title, which is entered through a touch screen. Store 12 custom programs with up to 32 segments per program. The Sentinel includes Novice Mode, which adds questions to guide you during programming. The controller can be updated through WiFi. View the progress of a firing in graph mode. The firing schedule can be edited during firing with Skip Step, Add Segments, Add Temperature, and Add Time. The Sentinel can turn a kiln vent or gas injection flow meter on or off for each segment of a program.

Orton Ventmaster, Not Installed
Orton Ventmaster, Not Installed
KILNVENT MASTER 120V M9 VENT MASTER (Installed after the kiln is set up) The patented Orton Vent Master not only vents fumes but also improves firing results.

Order a kiln with the Vent Master and we will drill all necessary holes at no extra charge. (Please note: kilns in stock will not be uncrated to drill the holes.) The holes are only ¼”.

The Vent Master requires a separate 120 volt wall plug unless your kiln is equipped with the AOP vent.

A 3’ long 2” duct comes with each vent. The 2” duct runs between the collection cup and the blower motor. Use 4” aluminum dryer duct or 4” PVC pipe between the motor and the vent outlet. (Do not use vinyl dryer duct.)

Position the Vent Master next to the kiln and attach the collection cup to the bottom or side of the kiln. The collection cup fits under most top-loading kilns. (Note: The kiln stand must be at least 5” high to accommodate the collection cup.) Since the vent motor is away from the kiln, there is no vibration in the kiln, the motor is kept away from the heat of the kiln, and the fan is easy to clean. The Vent Master works with all Paragon kilns except the smallest tabletop models. The Vent Master can vent two kilns. For the second kiln, order the Vent Master Expansion Kit.

Auxiliary Port for Orton Vent-Master
Auxiliary Port for Orton Vent-Master
AUXILLARY OUTPUT FOR SENTRY II CONTROLLERS (VENT CONTROL) The AOP (Auxiliary Output) is an electrical outlet mounted to the kiln. Plug either a downdraft vent or an external alarm into the AOP. Control the vent with Cone-Fire or Ramp-Hold modes.

The ceramic kiln deluxe stands are 12” high, and the glass kiln deluxe stands are 18” high. The stands include assembly instructions. The deluxe stand replaces the discontinued standard kiln stand.
The discontinued stands had four legs, four horizontal side pieces across the top, and plastic feet. The new stand has two side frames, two shelves, and four locking casters. The Ovation oval kilns will receive two stands per kiln.
The new stands slide together with slots that line up the screw holes. To install an Orton Kiln Vent, slide the collection cup into the vent bracket. The new stand eliminates the need for the collection cup mounting bolt.
Take advantage of the heat that radiates from the kiln. Load greenware on the lower shelf. Heat from the kiln will dry the ware and prepare it for the next firing. Save the time and expense of drying the ware inside the kiln.

Paragon Super Dragon

The Super Dragon is an industrial furnace designed for pottery and ceramic studios. And considering its features, it is surprisingly affordable.

The Super Dragon exudes power. Its 21,600 watts heat the 27” wide, 27” deep, 36” high interior to cone 10 with ample power to spare. This results in long element life, because the elements do not “struggle” to reach high temperatures. Dropped, recessed grooves seat industrial-gauge elements.

Extra insulation saves energy and lengthens cooling. The 4” thick walls, top and door are made of 3” firebrick backed by 1” of ceramic fiber block insulation. The floor is 4 ½” thick firebrick. The extra insulation not only saves energy but also cools the kiln slowly without having to turn the elements back on. This gives the micro-crystalline structure and color of the glaze sufficient time for full development. Cool slowly to achieve dramatic shifts in glaze color such as iron reds and enjoy the richer look of gas firing. Create breathtaking pottery in the exciting Super Dragon.

The elements are “tuned,” which means hotter elements are placed in areas of the firing chamber that need more heat. This results in superior heat distribution.

The Sentry 2.0 digital controller is standard on Paragon front-loading pottery kilns. Results are repeatable from one firing to the next with astounding accuracy. The solid-state controller continually monitors the firing. This is almost like hiring an assistant.

Do you ever wonder how much electricity your kiln uses? The digital controller will figure this for you; merely program the kiln’s wattage and your cost of electricity into the controller. Learn to conserve energy by experimenting with firing speed, load density, etc.

The Type-K thermocouple, hermetically sealed for accuracy, is standard. We also recommend the optional Type-S for stoneware and porcelain.

Long-lasting mercury relays power the elements. A bank of built-in NEC/UL compliant high-amperage fuses protects the kiln and circuit wiring. Potters who struggle with top-loading kilns will enjoy the Super Dragon. The door swings open wide on a heavy hinges with sealed bearings. The Super Dragon has a floating door system with four spring door latches. The door hinge is fastened to a 2” tubular steel frame that extends from the floor to the top of the kiln. The latches press the door tightly closed.

The ventilated switch box is generously louvered for air circulation for the long life of the electrical components. Yet dust is kept to a minimum.

The stand is built into the Super Dragon and comes at no extra charge. (Note: Casters are not available for the Super Dragon.)

Doorway Clearance

The Super Dragon will fit through a 42” doorway.

Order the optional Orton Vent Master, which mounts to the back of the kiln. (Note: Door elements and stainless steel finish are not available on the Super Dragon.)

Options and Accessories

3 Zone Control Upgrade – Type K Thermocouples
Improve temperature uniformity. The standard digital Paragon kiln is single zone; 3-zone is a factory-installed option that controls temperature from 3 separate locations in the kiln.

3 Zone Control Upgrade – Type S Thermocouples
Improve temperature uniformity. The standard digital Paragon kiln is single zone; 3-zone is a factory-installed option that controls temperature from 3 separate locations in the kiln. Deluxe S-Type thermocouples are ideal for temperatures over cone 4.

Door Safety Switch
The optional door safety switch turns off power to the heating elements when the door is opened. The controller remains powered. The switch turns the power to the elements back on when the door is closed. The switch mounts to the top of the door hinge shaft. Paragon recommends the safety switch on enameling kilns where enameling pieces are inserted into a hot kiln, and on glass kilns where the hot glass is raked or embossed. IMPORTANT: The door safety switch is required in some areas such as Canada and Europe.

Orton Auto-Cone Backup Shutoff
The Auto-Cone is an optional factory-installed safety backup for digital kilns. It comes without the Limit Timer. The Auto-Cone is housed in a separate box on the side of the kiln. The price shown below is for the Auto-Cone backup ordered for a new digital kiln.

The Auto-Cone operates the same as the earlier Dawson Kiln Sitter. Mount a small cone on the cone supports. Since the Auto-Cone is a safety backup, the cone should be one to two cones hotter than the programmed firing. Thus, the digital controller can still turn off the kiln at the proper time.

Orton improved the basic Kiln Sitter design. The Auto-Cone uses a more durable metal in the sensing rod and cone supports that withstands high temperatures better than stainless steel. They also chrome-plated the swivel parts to help resist corrosion. Each Auto-Cone comes with a screwdriver, allen wrenches, and a downloadable operating manual.

Even though a kiln is equipped with the Auto-Cone backup shut-off, you should still monitor the kiln from time to time during operation. We cannot guarantee a kiln against overfiring.

Furniture Kit
Recommended furniture kit for the Paragon Dragon, Super Dragon, and equivalent sized kilns.dulcemieleventsluded:
1 C-30 Shelf (22” x 22” x 1”)
4 - C30H ½ Shelves (22” x 11” x 1”)
1 1/2” wide Square Posts, 8 each of - 4”, 6”, 8” lengths
1 lb. Bag Kiln Wash
Shipping size: 24” long x 24” wide x 9” high
Ware is fired on shelves that are separated by posts so you can fire multiple layers of ware in your kiln. Coat the shelves with kiln wash, which prevents glaze or glass from sticking to the shelves.

PC Control Port for Sentry 2.0

Orton Vent-Master
KILNVENT MASTER 120V M9 VENT MASTER (Installed after the kiln is set up)

The patented Orton Vent Master not only vents fumes but also improves firing results.

Type S Thermcouple Upgrade (Single Zone)
Optional Type-S premium-grade thermocouple for 2 1/2" - 3" wall kilns. Ideal for firings above cone 4. It is extremely long lasting even at stoneware temperatures. Note: Select the correct thermocouple type under Options on your Sentry controller.

Paragon Xpress-J-14-2

The digital Xpress-J-14-2 is popular for heating jewelry molds. The kiln is made of ceramic fiber for fast heating and cooling. The digital controller yields consistent quality jewelry molds. It is a real time-saver. Set the controller and spend your time working on jewelry instead of monitoring the kiln. The Xpress-J-14-2 operates on 240 volts. Maximum temperature is 1700° F.

The firing chamber is a one-piece ceramic fiber shell with embedded elements. For greater thermal efficiency, the space between the steel case and the ceramic fiber shell is filled with extra ceramic fiber insulation.

The Xpress-J-14-2 comes with a vent hole and steel cover in the top and door. The door seals tightly with a heavy spring latch. The controls, located in the base, stay cool for long life. No extra stand is needed.

The Xpress-J-14-2 is available with an optional wax tray for lost wax casting.

Paragon SC-3 Silver & Glass Kiln with Glass Window

The digital SC-3 kiln fires Art Clay Silver and PMC silver clays, decals, china paint, enameling, and glass in minutes up to 2000°F. The SC-3 is popular with seminar teachers because it fires so fast, plugs into a 120 volt outlet, and is easy to sell.

The SC-3 has been in production since 1998. It is a proven design that we have steadily refined every year. Artists in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Japan love their SC-3.

The SC-3, for a digital kiln, is surprisingly affordable. It fires automatically at the rate and temperature you enter. A large, brightly lit display prompts for firing rate, temperature and hold time. Use the hold feature to automatically soak any type of clay silver to its recommended time.

The ceramic fiber firing chamber is wrapped in a steel inner case. The outer steel case remains cool due to the layer of air between it and the inner case. In addition, the case is slotted for air circulation. Electrical components, located in the base, stay cool even at extended hold times. A powerful rare earth magnet holds the bead door open.

The 6 1/2” wide bead door includes a brushed stainless steel mandrel holder. The 1” x 3” window is beveled for a wide view of the kiln interior. Watch your project turn bright red through the window, which is guaranteed up to 1700°F. (Note: Always wear firing safety glasses when viewing the kiln interior.)

The fast firing element is embedded in the firing chamber shell. It includes a top vent for lost wax casting.

The SC-3 has separate heating elements in the left and right sides of the firing chamber. The back of the chamber has no element. This results in improved heat distribution, because heat does not build up in the back of the kiln.

Each SC-3 includes a 1/4” thick ceramic fiber shelf.

SC-3 Features

  • On/off safety switch
  • Door opens 180 degrees for easy loading
  • The case is slotted for air circulation
  • Electrical components in the base stay cool even at extended hold times

  • Includes a 1/4” thick ceramic fiber shelf

Paragon SC-3 Silver & Glass Kiln with Glass Window

The heat of the kiln is magical and offers wonderful surprises. Stained glass, enamels, and ceramic glazes undergo a complete transformation in the kiln. Opening a kiln to view your treasures is a special moment that you will never outgrow.

Glass View Port

Watch the bright red kiln interior through the SC-3 Vista’s 2” x 2” glass view port. (Note: always wear firing safety glasses when viewing the kiln interior.) The glass view port is guaranteed up to 2300°F.

The view port is especially useful for glass fusing. Watch the glass progress through every stage of firing to the precise stage you desire.

Paige Litfin of Culver City, California said, “I have the SC-2 with window, and I do enameling and metal clay. Since I am new to enameling, I couldn't live without the window. I do use a timer and try to keep good notes, but I neeeeed to look in that window.”

Paragon SC-2 Silver & Glass Kiln with Bead Door and Window

Ideal for Teachers

“I have traveled with my SC-2 for 11 years. I sometimes have to use welding gloves to put the warm kiln on a cart, take it outside, load it in the car, and wrap it in a wool blanket.

“I have traveled out of state with my SC-2 repeatedly. Fired it over and over again in class, burned up all manner of skewers, toothpicks, cork clay and more. The kiln can take it! While I'm sure the kiln wouldn't mind an easier life, it's doing fine.” –Elaine Luther of River Forest, Illinois, USA

The heat of the kiln is magical and offers wonderful surprises. Stained glass, enamels, and ceramic glazes undergo a complete transformation in the kiln. Opening a kiln to view your treasures is a joy that you will never outgrow. Experiment with reactive glass colors, screen printing on glass, glass decals, painting with frit and stringers, glass pendants, the endless beauty of dichroic glass . . . the list goes on and on.

You can try the amazing Art Clay Silver, PMC silver clay, and even glass clay. Shape these clays with simple tools and fire them in the kiln. The digital SC-2 kiln fires china paint, enameling, and glass in minutes. Fire up to 2000°F. The SC-2 is popular with seminar teachers because it fires fast, plugs into a standard 120 volt household outlet, ships by UPS, and is easy to sell.

The base model SC-2 has been in production since 1997. It is a proven design that we have steadily refined every year. Thousands of artists in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Japan love their SC-2. The SC-2 is popular in art centers, colleges, craft classes, and even engineering laboratories.

Easy to Fire

The SC-2 can hold three shelves of silver clay yet is portable enough to take with you to classes. Program the firing schedule that is perfect for your projects. You are not stuck with preset programs. The programmer turns itself off after the firing is completed. (Please note, however, that you should be near the kiln at the expected shutoff time.) the SC-2 is great in classrooms because the elements are embedded in ceramic fiber.

Even Heat Distribution

Several years ago we redesigned the kiln for improved heat distribution. The new design has two separate heating elements in the left and right sides of the firing chamber. The back of the chamber has no element. Extensive testing shows that the heat distribution in the new SC-2 is more even throughout the firing chamber, because heat does not build up in the back of the kiln.

Affordable, Easy to Program

The SC-2 with bead door and window, for a digital kiln, is surprisingly affordable and made right here in Mesquite, Texas USA. It fires automatically at the rate and temperature you enter. A large, brightly lit display prompts for firing rate, temperature, and hold time. Use the hold feature to automatically soak any type of clay silver to its recommended time.

The Convenience of the Bead Door and Glass Window

Anneal glass beads with the 6 1/2” wide bead door, which includes a brushed stainless steel mandrel holder. Insert the mandrel into the kiln. The bead door stays partially open while the glass anneals. The kiln ships with a rare earth magnet to hold open the bead door.

The 1” x 3” window is beveled for a wide view of the kiln interior. The high-tech ceramic fiber firing chamber is wrapped in a steel inner case. The outer steel case remains cool due to the layer of air between it and the inner case. In addition, the case is slotted for air circulation. Electrical components, located in the base, stay cool even at extended hold times.

Paige Litfin of Culver City, California said, “I have the SC-2 with window, and I do enameling and metal clay. Since I am new to enameling, I couldn't live without the window. I do use a timer and try to keep good notes, but I neeeeed to look in that window.”

The view port is especially useful for glass fusing and copper enameling. Watch the glass or enameling progress through every stage of firing to the precise stage you desire.

The fast-firing element is embedded in the firing chamber shell. Each SC-2 includes a 1/4” thick ceramic fiber shelf.

The SC-2 is popular with seminar teachers because it fires fast, plugs into a standard household outlet, ships by UPS, and is easy to sell.

A Proven Design

The SC-2 has been in production since 1997. It is a proven design that we have steadily refined every year. Thousands of artists in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Japan love their SC-2. The SC-2 is popular in art centers, colleges, craft classes, and even engineering laboratories.

The high-tech ceramic fiber firing chamber is wrapped in a steel inner case. The outer steel case remains cool due to the layer of air between it and the inner case. In addition, the case is slotted for air circulation. Electrical components, located in the base, stay cool even at extended hold times.

Large Yet Portable

The SC-2 can hold three shelves of silver clay yet is portable enough to take with you to classes. Program the firing schedule that is perfect for your projects. You are not stuck with preset programs. The programmer turns itself off after the firing is completed. (Please note, however, that you should be near the kiln at the expected shutoff time.) The SC-2 is great in classrooms because the elements are embedded in ceramic fiber.

Even Heat Distribution

The newest SC-2 has two separate heating elements in the left and right sides of the firing chamber. The back of the chamber has no element. Extensive testing shows that the heat distribution in the current SC-2 is more even throughout the firing chamber, because heat does not build up in the back of the kiln.

Affordable, Easy to Program

The SC-2, for a digital kiln, is surprisingly affordable and proudly made in the U.S.A. to exacting standards. It fires automatically at the rate and temperature you enter. A large, brightly lit display prompts for firing rate, temperature, and hold time. Use the hold feature to automatically soak any type of clay silver to its recommended time.

The fast-firing element is embedded in the firing chamber shell. Each SC-2 includes a 1/4” thick ceramic fiber shelf.

Paragon QuikFire 6—From Zero to 1000°F in Five Minutes!

The QuikFire 6 brings instant gratification to ceramics, glass fusing, enameling, and china painting. Small glass pieces can be fired and cooled to room temperature in only 30 to 40 minutes. Small ceramic pieces take only 40 to 50 minutes. No more waiting to fill your larger kiln to test-fire a new technique or new glaze. No more waiting until morning to see freshly fired ware.

"The QuikFire 6 is a great kiln for checking a concept,” said Lynn Perry. “The last time I used the QuikFire, I wanted to confirm that a small new earring design would bend rather than just drawn into itself, and within 30 minutes I had my answer. I put together 80 pairs of earrings after the verification. If I had just taken a chance and not done a test, it could have been a very expensive mistake, because I would have not oriented the pieces properly on my forms and not gotten a bend."

Demonstrate the QuikFire to your family and watch their astounded reaction. Demonstrate it at craft shows, and crowds will gather.

Experimenting with the QuikFire is fun. Instead of risking a good piece of greenware on an untried technique, you can fire throw-away clay scraps and view the results in minutes. This kiln is a learning tool you will use over and over, whether you’re a beginner or a master.

The QuikFire is a ceramic fiber shell with an embedded element. It measures 6" x 6" x 6" inside. The shell rests on a ceramic fiber base with steel stand. The QuikFire is rated to 2000°F. It fires on 120 volts and needs no other heating source. At only 1560 watts, it uses less power than many hair driers.

To see how your work is progressing, tilt the shell up an inch for several seconds. Read temperature at a glance with the built-in pyrometer, which indicates when to start watching the ware inside the kiln.

You can make projects faster with two or more shelves. As the kiln is firing, prepare your next project on the spare shelf in the furniture kit. Remove the first shelf and insert the second. Leave items on the hot shelf that need slow cooling. The shelf keeps the pieces warm.

For European voltage, specify specify 240v.

The QuikFire 6 can ship by UPS. Enjoy lower shipping cost and faster service. Specially designed cartons and foam padding assure that the kiln will arrive safely.

“Everyone loves the QuikFire. While your main work is firing, you can have fun with the QuikFire.”—Dan Fenton, Fenton Glass Studio, Oakland, California

A QuikFire 6 That Went Around the World

By Betty Jean Scott (Las Vegas, Nevada)

“My Paragon QuikFire 6 has traveled with me around the world. After two years in Moscow, we were assigned to three years at the embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

“I create lamp work beads over flame and use my Paragon kiln for annealing the glass. But mostly I create fused glass cabochons for my jewelry. I will often spend over an hour filling the 6” x 6” shelf with several completely different intricate designs before placing the hood on top and firing the glass.

“Because of the design of the kiln, it is very easy to raise the hood and use my tools to modify the shapes of the glass while it is hot. Firings take less than an hour, including the stepped flashing, and within three hours the glass is out of the kiln, and I am ready to create again.

“During our time overseas, I made many friends. There is something about ladies and crafts that provide a common bond. I used my kiln to introduce my friends to glass, and worked with each of them to bring their creations to reality. One of my honors was to be invited to bring my jewelry to the Australian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur for a show and sell.

“Many friends and their families, all over the world today, are wearing glass made in my Paragon Kiln. I am very happy with my Paragon Kiln, and I know it will continue to bring my creative ideas to life for many years to come.”

Paragon’s warranty is not affected by frequency of use. Fire your new kiln every day if you want, even in commercial settings. That will have no effect on the warranty period.

Paragon Janus Dragon

The Janus Dragon is an industrial furnace that fires both pottery and glass. And considering its features, it is surprisingly affordable.

The Janus Dragon exudes power. Its 16,800 watts heat the 24” wide, 24” deep, 27” high interior to cone 10 with ample power to spare. Dropped, recessed grooves seat industrial-gauge wall and roof elements. (You can even order the optional door elements.)

Select between glass and pottery with the flip of a switch. With the switch in the glass position, heat comes from the top elements and the middle sidewall element. With the switch in the pottery position, heat comes from only the sidewall elements.

In the glass mode, fuse and sag large glass projects placed on a single shelf. In the pottery mode, fire to cone 10. You can also fire several shelves of smaller glass pieces using the pottery mode.

The elements in the roof are mounted in a firebrick “ball” groove that eliminates element pins. The element coils are wider than the groove opening, so the elements stay in place without pins. The groove dissipates heat efficiently.

Extra insulation saves energy. The 4” thick walls, top and door are made of 3” firebrick backed by 1” of ceramic fiber block insulation. The floor is 4 ½” thick firebrick. The extra insulation not only saves energy but also cools slowly. This gives the micro-crystalline structure and color of the glaze sufficient time for full development.

The ventilated switch box is generously louvered for air circulation for the long life of the electrical components. Yet dust is kept to a minimum. Hinged at the bottom, the switch box opens wide for easy maintenance. Open the box in seconds by merely removing two screws at the top. A folding support arm holds the box in the open position. There is plenty of working space around electrical components.

Long-lasting mercury relays power the elements. A bank of built-in NEC/UL compliant high-amperage fuses protects the kiln and circuit wiring. Potters who struggle with top-loading kilns will enjoy the Janus Dragon. The door swings open wide on a heavy ¾” steel rod with sealed bearings. Two spring-loaded latches press the door tightly closed.

The 24” tall stand is also available with casters for easy moving. The stand is priced separately from the Janus Dragon. Also available is the 8” tall stand, which comes with casters.

When ordering a Janus Dragon, specify whether the stand is to ship separate from the Janus Dragon or pre-installed and shipped as one unit.

Doorway Clearance

The Janus Dragon will fit through a 34” doorway if the handles and back element cover are temporarily removed.

The Janus Ovation Glass/Pottery Kiln

Glass and Pottery Firing Modes

The Paragon Janus Ovation can fire both pottery and glass. Heating elements are mounted in the top and sidewalls.

You can also fire several shelves of smaller glass pieces in pottery mode.

Production Loads

If you have been firing a smaller kiln, you will be amazed at the space inside the Janus Ovation. Fire large projects such as bowls or platters in one load. Imagine how many clay or glass pendants you could fire in the Janus Ovation. As you can see, production loads can quickly pay for this kiln.

Spring-Assisted Lid

Patented dual spring-assisted lid lifters transfer the weight of the lid to a massive hinge assembly on the back of the kiln. This reduces the stress on the kiln wall to give your kiln the long life that Paragon kilns are famous for. The truss and floating lid system allow for expansion of the lid. Ask competitors if their lid spring system includes a floating lid.

Pinless Lid Elements

The elements in the lid are mounted in a firebrick “ball” groove that eliminates element pins. The element coils are wider than the groove opening, so the elements stay in place without pins. The groove dissipates heat efficiently. The lid element grooves and inner lid surface are coated with a special hardener for long life.

Mercury Relays

Will you anneal glass for long periods in your Janus Ovation? Then you will be glad mercury relays are standard on this kiln. The mercury relays found on our large industrial kilns outlast mechanical relays. The life of the quiet, reliable mercury relay has been measured in millions of on/off cycles.

Easy Maintenance

The patented control box on the Janus Ovation opens forward for easy maintenance. A folding support arm holds the box in the open position for your convenience. The control box is finished in durable high temperature, blue water-base paint. We chose water-base paint because of the low emissions during spraying. This creates a safer working environment for our employees and cuts down on pollution.

Quality Components

A heavy galvanized steel base completely covers the reversible brick bottom. Tabs on the steel base fold up inside the stainless case on all sides to strengthen the firing chamber. This is one more assurance that your Paragon kiln is built to last.

Two kiln stands are included with your Janus Ovation. The stands are complete with mar-proof plastic feet and tall enough to accommodate the optional Orton Vent Master.

Wires are fastened to the elements with heat-dissipating connectors refined and proven over many years in Paragon kilns. Crimpless element connectors are easy to install and are included with replacement elements.

And, of course, the Paragon Janus Ovation is made in America by skilled workers. Many of them have been with Paragon for over a decade.

The digital Sentry 2.0 includes two modes: Cone-Fire with programmed slow cooling and 18-Segment Ramp-Hold. It is manufactured by the Orton Ceramic Foundation exclusively for Paragon.

The controller is mounted near the top of the switch box for easy operation. For your convenience, operating instructions are silk-screened onto the switch box.

The thermocouple is protected with a high-nickel stainless steel sheath for long life.

Orton Ventmaster, Not Installed
Orton Ventmaster, Not Installed
KILNVENT MASTER 120V M9 VENT MASTER (Installed after the kiln is set up) The patented Orton Vent Master not only vents fumes but also improves firing results.

The Janus-27 Glass/Pottery Kiln

The new Paragon Janus-27 can fire both pottery and glass. Heating elements are mounted in the top and sidewalls.

Select between glass and pottery with the flip of a switch. With the switch in the glass position, heat comes from the top elements and the middle sidewall element. With the switch in the pottery position, heat comes from only the sidewall elements.

Imagine the glass and pottery you could fire in this kiln. Make small bowls, pendants, earrings, cufflinks, and even bracelets in clay or glass. Make treasured gifts. When you own a Paragon kiln, you can experiment with new ideas to your heart’s content.

In the glass mode, fuse and sag large glass projects placed on a single shelf. In the pottery mode, fire to cone 10. You can also fire several shelves of smaller glass pieces using the pottery mode.

The elements in the lid are mounted in a firebrick “ball” groove that eliminates element pins. The element coils are wider than the groove opening, so the elements stay in place without pins. The groove dissipates heat efficiently.

The lid on the Janus-27 is easy to lift with the exclusive, patented Paragon spring counter-balance. For easier maintenance, we use 2” high blank wall bricks in the top row of the Janus-27. Since the brick is without element grooves, it is less susceptible to damage during loading.

The patented control box on the Janus-27 opens forward for easy maintenance. A folding support arm holds the box in the open position. The control box is finished in a durable high temperature, water-base blue paint. We chose water-base paint because of the low emissions during spraying. This creates a safer working environment for our employees and cuts down on pollution.

Will you anneal glass for long periods in your Janus-27? Then we recommend the mercury relay upgrade. The mercury relays found on our large industrial kilns outlast mechanical relays. The life of the quiet, reliable mercury relay has been measured in millions of on/off cycles. Please call for a price on the mercury relay upgrade.

The thermocouple is protected with a high-nickel stainless steel sheath for long life.

A heavy galvanized steel base covers the reversible brick bottom completely. It folds up under the stainless case on all sides to strengthen the firing chamber. This is one more assurance that your Paragon kiln is built to last.

Wires are fastened to the elements with heat-dissipating connectors refined and proven over many years in Paragon kilns. Elements are coiled from the finest high-temperature wire available.

A kiln stand is included at no extra charge. The stand is complete with mar-proof plastic feet.

Large, tapered peepholes offer a wide view of the firing chamber with little heat loss. The peepholes, both sides of the lid and top rim of sidewall firebrick are hardened and sealed with a special refractory coating to protect the ware from dust.

And, of course, the Paragon Janus-27 is made in America by skilled workers. Many of them have been with Paragon for over a decade.

The Janus-24 Glass/Pottery Kiln

The Paragon Janus-24 can fire both pottery and glass. Heating elements are mounted in the top, sidewalls, and door.

Glass and clay firing modes

Select between glass and pottery with the flip of a switch. With the switch in the glass position, heat comes from the top elements and the middle sidewall element. With the switch in the pottery position, heat comes from only the sidewall elements.

In the glass mode, fuse and sag large glass projects placed on a single shelf. In the pottery mode, fire to cone 10. You can also fire several shelves of smaller glass pieces in pottery mode.

The Janus-24 digital kiln heats from the top, three sides and door for unsurpassed heat distribution. Bend glass for curved windows or cabinet doors and to repair lampshades. Make huge glass-fused platters. Crack the door to drag a rod across the softened glass or to emboss designs in the surface. Explore small-to-medium sized casting and pâte de verre. Enjoy the glittering beauty of dichroics. Make treasured gifts.

Advanced element grooves

The elements in the roof are mounted in a firebrick “ball” groove that eliminates element pins. The element coils are wider than the groove opening, so the elements stay in place without pins. The groove dissipates heat efficiently.

Wires are fastened to the elements with heat-dissipating connectors refined and proven over many years in Paragon kilns. Elements are coiled from the finest high-temperature wire available.

Optional mercury relay

If you need to anneal glass for extended periods in your Janus-24, purchase the optional mercury relay upgrade. Mercury relays, which are found on our large industrial kilns, outlast mechanical relays. The life of the quiet, reliable mercury relay has been measured in millions of on/off cycles.

Heavy duty components

The insulating firebrick, wrapped in heavy-gauge steel, soak up heat for slow, efficient cooling. A double heat shield and air gap between the kiln and ventilated switch box help keep electrical components cool for long, trouble-free service. Costly heavy-gauge nickel-plated copper wiring is covered with high temperature glass-braided insulation. font>

The spring-pressure latch and a ½" recess around the edge of the firebrick door keep the door tightly closed. The door remains rock-steady on a heavy hinge shaft. Four hand lifts aid moving. The base is open in the back and slotted to dissipate heat.

Thermocouple with “special limit” wire

The thermocouple senses temperature inside the kiln. It is the small rod that extends into the side of the firing chamber. The Janus-24 comes with an exposed-tip thermocouple made with special-limit wire for superior accuracy. The new and improved thermocouple replaces our earlier sheathed thermocouple. The new thermocouple is made in America to our exacting standards.

Two peepholes

Watch the red-hot glass through two tapered peepholes, drilled one above the other in the wall opposite the switch box. Peephole plugs are included.

Door safety switch

The kiln includes a door safety switch that turns off the elements when the door is opened. The controller remains powered and automatically resumes firing when you close the door.

Digital temperature accuracy

The digital Sentry 2.0 includes two modes: Cone-Fire with programmed slow cooling and the fully customizable Ramp-Hold mode. Manufactured by the Orton Ceramic Foundation exclusively for Paragon.

Learn to conserve energy by experimenting with firing speed, load density, etc.

Environmentally friendly paint

The Janus-24 has a durable high temperature, water-base finish. We chose water-base paint because of the low emissions during spraying. This creates a safer working environment for our employees and cuts down on pollution.

Made in America

And, of course, the Janus-24 is proudly made in the U.S. by skilled workers. Many of our master kiln builders have been with Paragon for well over a decade.

Designed for high production

Paragon’s warranty is not affected by frequency of use. Fire your new kiln every day if you want, even in commercial or school settings. That will have no effect on the warranty.

240 or 208 volts

Most of Paragon’s standard 240 volt kilns can be ordered in 208 volts. To compensate for the lower voltage, Paragon’s 208 volt kilns use a different set of elements so they will perform as well as the equivalent 240 volt models. For this reason, the elements in 240 and 208 volt kilns, even for the same kiln model, are not interchangeable. So please be sure to specify the correct voltage when you order your kiln. By using different elements for different voltages, total watts consumed by different kiln versions remain the same. 240 and 208 kilns of the same model have the same maximum temperature rating.

Phones answered by humans

At Paragon, phone calls that we receive during business hours are answered by a live person at the factory. We are here to help you long after the sale should you ever need it.

Martin Bush of Richardson, Texas owns a Janus-24. “What I like about it is the ability to fire ceramics, so I can make my own molds for slumping glass,” said Martin. “I have noticed that in the glass mode, the kiln cannot handle fast temperature rates (500 degrees per hour or higher), usually when I do pot melts. No problem. I just use the ceramic mode, which easily handles the higher rates. The size is great for a variety of projects, from small to large. Now that I see where I can use the ceramic setting with multiple shelves on small projects, even better!”

Furniture
Recommended furniture kit for the Paragon Janus-24 and equivalent sized kilns.dulcemieleventsluded:
1 - C-22GL Shelf (22” Square x 1”)
2 - C-30H Shelves (22” x 11” x 1”)
1 1/2” wide Square Posts, 4 of each - ½”, 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” lengths
1 lb. Glass Separator
Shipping Weight: 76.00 Lbs.   ( 34.47 Kg.)

Ware is fired on shelves that can withstand high temperatures. The shelves are separated by posts so you can fire multiple layers of ware in your kiln. Coat the shelves with kiln wash, which prevents glaze or glass from sticking to the shelves.

Paragon’s durable cordierite shelves resist warpage and thermal shock. They are volume-stable. (Note: The photo shows a general assortment of furniture rather than the exact contents of this shelf kit.)

Orton Ventmaster, Not Installed
Orton Ventmaster, Not Installed
KILNVENT MASTER 120V M9 VENT MASTER (Installed after the kiln is set up) The patented Orton Vent Master not only vents fumes but also improves firing results.
